Good Pizza, Great Pizza | Bringing quirky to the Restaurant Sims Genre
"Good Pizza, Great Pizza is a Restaurant Simulator produced and distributed by Tapblaze. It is available on IOS, Android, and Steam."
For me the first time I played a restaurant Sim was with Cake Mania(2006) and Burger Island(≈2007) on MSN. The Cake Mania series was part of a variety of time management games similar to dining dash, while Burger Island and its sequel was one of the progenitors for modern mobile Restaurant Sims such as Cooking Madness and Cooking Fever. Moving into the early 2010's business sims became popular again with Zynga's 2012 Chefville for Facebook and in the Flash market with Fliplines fifth Installment in their restaurant sims Papa's Pancakeria. Nowadays Restaurant Sims have reached a decent level of saturation on the market and I had become numb to the many carbon copies of Burger Island Clones and unsatisfying Idle based Kairosoft ripoffs. So when I discovered Good Pizza, Great Pizza which had a humorous art style and a *GASP* Original UI I was instantly interested in trying this novel Cooking Game.
You begin the game by having a grand opening for your pizzeria as the new "ovenist" on the block in a city that eat, sleeps, and breathes pizza. You are lovingly accosted by "your pizza rival" Alicante a large Mustachioed and extremely tsundere man who negs you into making him a pizza. There is the creation phase as well as the baking and cutting phase to create the perfect pizzas for your customers. Unlike fliplines games which emphases multitasking and time management GPGP emphasizes accuracy and attention to details which are exacerbated by your patrons often confusion instructions.
One thing I really loved about GPGP was the sense of narrative in the gameplay. There were recurring characters, festivals, and "Special Events" were you had to creatively make pizzas to progress a side story. It really shows the depth and constraints of the system and was innovative for the style. The dialogue was humourous and bizarre coming off in a tumblr-esque style reminiscent of PlasterBrains Pizza Game another great aspect was their emphasis on diverse character design.
The music is enjoyable providing a nice background to the gameplay though I personal found the sound effects to be a bit grating on the ears. The game also works very well with muted allowing me to listen to podcast and music while I served slices of 'za
Good Pizza, Great Pizza is a great addition to the Restaurant Sim genre bringing together a quirky, enjoyable, experience wrapped up in the procedural grind of the levels. If you enjoy Narrative-Rich Procedural games like Papers Please of if your looking for something new in Restaurant or cooking Sims then Good Pizza, Great Pizza is a great option.
