11 Shows I'm excited to see on Quibi

"Quick Bites, Big Stories"

Quibi, (short for QUIck BItes), is a new streaming service whose innovation is the advent of 10 minute short form television and entertainment meant to fit into our busy modern schedule. With directors like Spielberg and Guillermo del toro creating original content and actors like Chris Hemsworth, Zac Efron, Chrissy Teigen and Naomi Watts starring in their own shows Quibi has amassed a star studded cast for their platform. Here is eleven series I am excited to see come out April 6th.

1. Emma

First on our list is a seemingly Rosemary Baby inspired story. AnnaSophia Rob stars in "Emma" which revolves around a young woman dealing with the disturbing effects of her pregnancy and the conspiracy that evolves around it. Emma is produced by Dark Castle Entertainment (Thirteen Ghosts) and Propagate (Amazon's Lore).

2. Tomie

Junjo Ito is a juggernaut in horror fiction and Tomie is considered one of his best work, (along with Gyo, the Curse on Animagi Fault and Uzumaki.) Junjo Ito adaptations tend to fair poorly with the heavily panned Junjo Ito Collection and the Japanese Tomie Movie series getting mostly mixed reviews. That being said Tomie is one of the Ito's best work and I'm excited to see how Quibi handles the work especially since there "Chapter" style might be the perfect format for Ito's Manga. Tomie is directed by Alexandra Aja and produced by Sony Pictures Television and Universal Content Productions.

3. Most Dangerous Game

Most Dangerous Game not to be confused with the 1932 Movie is a Action-thriller staring Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games) where he has be the survivor of a dangerous game of Cat-and-Mouse to save his pregnant wife. While Battle Royales are not a new concept the Borne-esque action and paranoia or the main character coupled with the ARG aesthetic, (reminiscent of Nerve(2016)) makes this new series stand out from the crowd.

4. When the Streetlights go on

A Black List feature that has taken a long time to come to the Small Screen, WTSGO is touted as a "Coming of age Murder Mystery" which with the death of a young Laura Palmer type while her sister and peers try to find normality while the investigation disrupts their tight knit community. It was produced by Paramount TV and Anonymous Content and features the acting talents of Queen Latifah, Chosen Jacobs, Sophie Thatcher, Sam Strike, Ben Ahlers, and Julia Sarah Stone.

5. Murder House Flip

1/2 half Forensic Files and 1/2 HGTV Murder House Flip is exactly what it sounds like contractors breathing new life into a house of death. Having the Pedigree of Producers Josh Berman (CSI) and Chris King (Penny Dreadful) as well as Author and Professor of Forensic Psychology Katherine Ramsland MHF definitely has the backing for a well produced show combining everyone's favorite things Murder Boards and Open Concept Breakfast Nooks. Being a fan of true crime MHF is definitely a new take on the home improvement genre in a sea of affluent white couples raving about shiplap.

6. Ice Cream Man

Given the recent popularity of Comic Book adaptations, (Such as last months fantastic Locke and Key), it makes perfect sense that Quibi has thrown its hat it the ring Adapting Image Comics popular Ice Cream Man. Utilizing ICM "one-shot" Narratives into a horror anthology series taking place in sleepy little American Suburbia.  The Series is written by Adam and Max Reid with executive producers Chris Bender, Jake Weiner, and Jake Wagner and is being developed by Universal Content Productions(The Sinner, The Umbrella Academy, The Magicians).

7. Murder Unboxed

Bringing true crime to Internet trends MU recreates a forensic file style episode by providing non-sequenter "Clues" That piece together how a murder was solved. It's definitely a novel concept and a new twist on the True Crime genre.

8. 50 States of Fear

I am a huge fan of American Folklore and mythology whether I'm listening to the Somnambulist tones of Aaron Mahnke or reading the work of S.E. Schlosser So when I heard about a horror anthology series based off of the folklore of the united states I was immediately intrigued. It was written by Sam Raimi and stars the acting talents of Victoria Justice, William B. Davis, and Asa Butterfield as well as quite a few others.

9. The Stranger

Not to be confused with up and coming Netflix Series, The Stranger is a intense thriller that centers around a Rideshare driver in a intense game of cat-and-mouse that takes places in the underbelly of the city after she takes on a mysterious murderous passenger.

It stars the acting talents of Dane DeHaan(A Cure for Wellness(2016)) and Maika Monroe( It Follows(2014)) and is directed by Veena Suds(The Killing).

10. Survive

Heading Quibi's lineup is Survive an aptly titled Survival Horror series as Sophie Turner(Game of Thrones) and Corey Hawkins(Straight Outta Compton) star as the only survivors of a plane crash into a snowy mountain landscape. The series is based on a book by Alex Morel and directed by Mark Pellington

11. Spielberg's After Dark

Not much, (by which I mean essentially nothing), is known about Spielberg's After Dark except that it will be utilizing our phones Internal Clock. According to Quibi's Keynote speech at CES 2020, Spielberg was initially skeptical until her realized he could make a series that would only be viewable after the sun goes down. Besides that we will  have to wait for April 6th to see what the shows entails.
