"describing a rock" is a podcast narrated by Milo Axelrod . I stumbled upon this podcast earlier this evening and I'm glad I did. Describing a rock is an interesting experience, it sounds like some sort of obscure ASMR video deep inside the YouTube algorithm but the podcast is a lot more then it seems. Often the episodes follow a very smooth melodic flow, calm and introspective. If the podcast wasn't so mundane I could easily believe it was written by Cranor or Fink. Not that its mundaneness is a bad thing. When Axelrod describes each rock she goes into the history of how she found it and the feelings and ideas associated with it. Just as in the description, "The rock is more than just a rock". Each episode is poignant with thoughtful dialogue and provocative tangents as Axelrod describes exhaustively about the rock she has in her hand. One episode "a roughly hewn granite cube" was especially emotional with a heavy and sincere look of regret and the tainting of beauty. Others are more calm such as "tumbled foggy quartz" where she discusses her feelings of machine-tumbled rocks and the arbitrariness of what is real or artificial.
Overall, the episodes are quite short 6-7 minutes on average. If you enjoy the narrative styles of Welcome To Night Vale or Within the Wires or if you just like artsy or emotional narratives I would definitely recommend the podcast. Either way, describing a rock is an excellent short narrative that is delightful to listen, feel, and think too. Definitely worth your time.
